73. Herzog-Veblen Principle 🔗

In which I formulate the Herzog-Veblen principle — that wildernesses are murderous but lazy, and visible effort marks you as food — applying it to the online world, where conspicuous hustling eventually makes you somebody's lunch. The only safe place to work hard is in a cage.

Herzog-Veblen principle: Wildernesses are murderous but lazy places. Savagery does not respect effort. Visible effort marks you as food. The harder you work the more you look like lunch.

Online=wilderness.

Conspicuous hustling is not sustainable past a point online. Even if you can keep going, the lolcow optics will get you and you’ll be somebody’s lunch.

You either chill out, or hide further hustling inside an organization.

The only place to safely work hard is in a cage.

My cat made me write this. He thinks I don’t work hard enough and tweeting more might get me more gigs. He’s a savage but not very bright.
